Square Enix CEO Takashi Kiryu closed out the FFXIV Fan Festival 2026 keynote in Anaheim on April 24 with one of the biggest announcements in the game's 13-year history: Final Fantasy XIV is launching on Nintendo Switch 2 in August 2026.
The MMO has appeared on PlayStation, PC, and more recently Xbox Series — but Nintendo hardware has been off-limits until now. That changes this summer, and there are a few important details every player needs to know before they buy anything.
What Was Announced at Fan Festival Anaheim
Producer and Director Naoki Yoshida (Yoshi-P) opened the keynote at the Anaheim Convention Center before Square Enix CEO Takashi Kiryu took the stage to personally reveal the Switch 2 version. A brief on-stage demo showed the game running on actual Switch 2 hardware.

What Is Evercold? The New Expansion Also Announced Today
The Switch 2 news came at the end of a keynote loaded with expansion details. Final Fantasy XIV: Evercold is the 8.0 expansion, arriving January 2027, and it is the most structurally ambitious update to the game since A Realm Reborn launched in 2013.
Major Evercold changes confirmed:
- New setting — The Fourth, a reflection (parallel world) ravaged by ice
- Level cap raised to 110 — up from the current 100
- Two new jobs — one tank and one physical ranged DPS, both announced as entirely original jobs not based on classic FF archetypes. The first job will be revealed at Fan Festival Berlin (July 2026), the second at Tokyo (October 2026)
- Reborn Mode vs. Evolved Mode — All existing jobs get two action sets. Reborn Mode preserves the current playstyle. Evolved Mode introduces new rotations with fewer buttons but greater emphasis on job identity. Players can switch between modes outside of combat. New jobs introduced in Evercold will only have Evolved Mode
- Tomestone system removed — Weekly progression replaces daily roulette capping. Players earn rewards through a wide range of activities including quests, dungeons, FATEs, and Frontlines — whatever suits their schedule
- Item level tied to character, not individual jobs — Gearing across multiple jobs becomes significantly less punishing
- Cross-World matchmaking — Party Finder and matchmaking will work across entire regions, not just Data Centers, going live in an upcoming patch before Evercold
The Evangelion Alliance Raid "Ghosts of Desire" is confirmed as part of the Evercold patch series. No additional details were shown — more information is expected at the Berlin fan festival in July.
Shadowbringers Added to the Free Trial
Effective with an upcoming patch update, Shadowbringers will be added to the FFXIV free trial. This means new players can now play through:
- A Realm Reborn (levels 1–50)
- Heavensward (levels 51–60)
- Shadowbringers (levels 71–80)
